While many realize that global warming is occurring on our planet, few understand the implications that this may have on our way of life. These rising global temperatures are going to cause a host of changes on our planet, and we need to act now or prepare to adjust to some very profound changes.

First, these rising temperatures present a huge threat to our ice-caps. Layers of ice that have not melted for thousands of years are beginning to break apart and fall into the ocean. One of the biggest ice sheets on the planet, located on Greenland, is at a great risk of splitting apart and falling into the ocean. While it doesn’t sound like too big of a deal, the loss of the Greenland ice sheet will cause catastrophic circumstances world wide. The world’s sea level is expected to rise as much as 23 feet when the sheet falls, and that spells disaster for the coastal cities that represent some of the largest and most important centers of trade and commerce across the planet. Manhattan would be sunk; much of Florida would be underwater, and that’s not even to mention the worldwide consequences. Every area of the globe would be affected by this rising of sea levels, and the disaster caused would make hurricane damage seem like a blessing. Millions of refugees from the coastal cities will be without home or workplace; it would be one of the hugest human issues ever faced in our history. The changing of the climate could also affect a host of circumstances on our planet; crop yields can be affected by the rising temperatures, which would also pose significant problems to a planet of refugees. Much of the land may become barren due to the effects of temperature change, and we may find some of our most arable lands subject to the effects of soil erosion, and eventually, a transition into desert land. Also, water supplies, forests, and plant and animal life would be affected by the planet’s changes, and we may not be able to see how significant these changes may affect our lives until they are already upon us. For that reason, it’s important that we increase our knowledge of global warming, and do our best to prevent it in the coming years. While it may have adverse affects on our economy and our way of life, we owe it to our children to give them a peaceful, safe planet to grow up in.

As the average temperature of the planet rises every year we also have started using the air conditioner more. The result is that we are heating up the environment even more. What happens is, whenever we turn on the air conditioner, it releases carbon into the air. And carbon has been identified as the element that insulates our planet and is a major contributor in global warming.

And if we are to believe recent studies, the worse is yet to come. Actually we have got into this vicious loop where the hotter it gets, the more of air conditioning we use, and consequently the earth gets even hotter.

If we look at the figures, we can understand that the average world temperature of the Earth has increased by 1 degree Fahrenheit in just the last century. Though it might sound minimal, it is actually a remarkable change. Scientists believe that much of this global warming can be attributed to the release of carbon dioxide and other green house gases which are released when we burn the conventional fossil fuels. What is being predicted is that the practice will continue for the coming years and it will only increase with time.

Compared to most other electric devices, the air conditioner consumes much more energy. So to keep the air conditioners running a lot of fossil fuels need to be used. Whenever you have your air conditioner working at full blast you should realize that you are contributing in your own way to the global warming.

If we account for all the power consumed by air conditioners alone across the country it would be something around half percent of the total energy that is used in by the United States. This seems a rather small figure. However, the problem is even half percent can make a serious contribution to the phenomenon of global warming.

Another problem is that the consumption of energy and hence the release of the greenhouse gases are not the same all over the country. So, particular areas are more affected than the rest.

Till the day we can use alternative forms of energy in a wide scale, turning on the air conditioner will always mean that the earth will be affected. The only way to limit the damage is by using high energy efficient air conditioners which require less power to run, and to keep the use of the air conditioners to the minimum level possible.

While most everyone associates gardening with growing a garden outdoors, that is not how all folks do it. When the weather outside will not permit, some folks enjoy gardening indoors. Thus, we have now come up with a way to make that happen. Gardening indoors, under a glass housing, is called green house gardening. The following paragraphs will discuss greenhouse gardening, as well as some of the processes involved in doing it successfully.

Green house gardening does not drastically differ from the outdoor methods of gardening, although there are some differences. The main difference in green house gardening is it is highly important to learn how to properly control the temperature inside of your greenhouse. Most plants tend to thrive in temperatures slightly lower than normal room temperature, and most of the time require much more humidity than we live with in our homes. This is a general rule when it comes to greenhouse gardening.

The very best way to produce the proper amount of sunlight, heat, and humidity in your garden greenhouse is to construct your actual greenhouse in an area you can take advantage of maximum levels of sunlight all year long. It is important to pay most attention to the sun locations during the spring, as well as autumn, months, when the sun is at its lowest point in the southern skies. For this reason, the ideal location to construct a garden greenhouse is where sun rays will reach through a southeastern to southwestern direction without obstruction.

When you are green house gardening, it is important to space your plants out evenly throughout your gardening areas of your greenhouse. This should be done in order to help ensure that ventilation flows evenly throughout your greenhouse. You should also open your greenhouse doors during the morning hours, then close them in the late afternoon. This will, as well, help to ensure proper ventilation. You can use these methods during the winter months, too, as long as you make sure weather reports do not indicate frost or snow.

As with any type of gardening, a water source if vital to the healthy production of your different plants. This is absolutely true with greenhouse gardening, as well. It is important to understand that your plants will not have natural water sources, however, it is as equally as important to understand not to over-water as a result of this. Some sort of irrigation system may work best in your garden greenhouse.

Finally, there are many ways you can design where your plants will grow when you choose green house gardening. This is much like outdoor garden planning, except that with greenhouse gardening you will not be growing your plants in the ground, but in deep containers, growing boxes, as well as big tubs. By doing this, you are not only protecting the roots of your plants from freezing ground temperatures, you are also making them easy to move, in the event they need special attention.

Composite findings of about 2,000 scientists do not augur well for future years due to the alarming rate the earth’s lower atmosphere is warming up. The world is being warned of hunger and thirst for millions (even billions) due to global warming. The continuous emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane has worsened the situation especially in the most recent years. Global warming has triggered climate change in all parts of the world, most apparent of which is the warming of the polar zones which has flushed water from the melted ice to the oceans, disrupting the ecology and the affecting the lifestyle of thousands of people.

Millions of homes (pegged at 7 million) could be washed away by sea levels that are continuously on the swell. The Great Barrier Reef, the pride of Australia and the refuge of most of the world’s most treasured sea creatures, (the living reef in itself considered as the biggest organism in the world) could die in just decades, the same reports say. This is part of the draft of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Global Warming Awareness 2007 or IPCC. This highly compelling study from IPCC is a significant development it has always been reputed for no-nonsense (neutral), highly statistical (cautious) reporting.

Australia is a focal point in one part of the reports, warning on the effects of warmer and more acidic seas on the Great Barrier Reef (mainly coral bleaching) by 2030. This detrimental effect is caused by the death of the corals, leaving only its skeleton (used to be sold but is now prohibited as decorative items tourist shops).

In the report, scientists say that the coast northeast of Australia known as The World Heritage would be most damaged by warmer temperatures. This means extinction of more than 133,000 square miles of underwater living wonders.

Over the past century (reference year 1900), global temperatures on the average have risen from 0.7 to 0.8 degrees. This has been documented as the culprit in the ongoing death or bleaching of the Indian coral reefs, as well as those in the Indian Ocean. Warmer temperatures also means more evaporation increasing the concentration of water vapor in the atmosphere, another influencing factor that has increased the greenhouse effect over the oceans by 4% over the past 35 years.

Once temperature increase reaches 2 – 3 degrees above that in 1900, Australias alpine zones will totally be gone. Another scary consequence would be the imminent total destruction of Amazon forest system of South America. The greatest casualty: biodiversity.

As with any late realizations, global warming awareness is not without tradeoffs in regards to human and economic costs, which is relatively higher in poor countries. Many African countries are now being debilitated by very serious water shortages. Flooding of coastal areas in low-lying regions is now a common phenomenon. Hardest hit are Bangladesh and many islands along the Pacific.

Other alarming consequences of global warming include:

Killer heat waves . They will be worse, will last longer, and will be more frequent than that of summer 2003 which hit southern Europe.

Stronger, more destructive tropical storms and hurricanes. There will also be marked increase in rainfall and flooding of coastlines.

High probability of ice-free summers in the Arctic, ongoing melting of mountain glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets.

Significant rise in sea levels. Even if carbon dioxide levels will be stabilized, the world will still stand witness to higher sea levels 0.43 meters higher in 2100 and 0.8 meters by 2300.
