Are you shopping around for power scooters? They can really transform the life of someone who feels trapped inside and is unable to get out and enjoy the outdoors because of limited mobility due to arthritis, weak legs, a bad back, or some other condition. Here are the questions you want to ask the sales person when you are shopping for a scooter:

1. How long has this model been out for? (A model that’s been out for a few months or a few years will have been “road tested” by other users so it will uncover any problems before you get it).

2. Is it front wheel drive (sometimes called “mid” wheel drive) or rear wheel drive?

3. What is the clearance on this scooter? (This will help you know how big of bumps you can go over if you have to).

4. How much does this power scooter cost?

5. What features does it have?

6. What is the difference between this scooter and power scooters that are slightly more expensive and slightly less expensive. (Asking this question will help you determine how they are pricing their extra features…you might find a less expensive scooter that suits your needs or you might find that a slightly more expensive scooter is far more appropriate for you).

7. How fast will this scooter go? (Of course you don’t want to join a race, but it’s important to know how fast it goes because you don’t want to be surprised by the top speed if you accidentally press it to go that fast).

8. How far will the scooter go on this battery?

9. How long with a recharge take?

10. Should I purchase two batteries and simply switch them back and forth?

11. What accessories are available for this scooter?

12. How much more does a canopy cost?

13. Which tires do you recommend for the type of driving that I am most likely to do? (Here, you’ll have to tell the sale associate what kind of driving you do: do you stay mostly indoors or do you like to go outdoors or do you like a mixture of both? If you like to go outdoors, you’ll have to tell the associate whether or not you live in an area that can get muddy or snowy.)

14. How often should I get my scooter tuned up? (Remember, power scooters are just like cars in that they need to be tuned up periodically).

15. Is there a service plan and a warranty?

16. Are there other options available? (Don’t buy the first power scooter you see that is in your price range without checking on the available options

Power scooters can provide you with a renewed sense of independence and freedom. Use this list of questions to help you find the right power scooter for your needs.

On any given day, the weather trend is usually the first subject of conversation. During the past month, anywhere you go in the United States, the price of gasoline has become a primary topic to complain about. Most people, and businesses, feel helpless when looking toward winter’s fuel bills.

Will dispensing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve help us? If you think short-term – Yes; it will help temporarily.

In fact, you can expect to see products and services increase in price due to the price of fuel and transportation. This is only the beginning of economic change. Many of the “Mom and Pop” businesses may not be able to adapt fast enough to handle the upcoming heating bills. Many of the local businesses, in my area, are still “smarting” from last winter’s fuel bills.

So what can we do? There has been a flood of Emails that tell us to boycott a particular oil company, but nobody can agree on exactly which company to boycott. Most oil companies are considered “greedy corporate giants,” with questionable political agendas, by the consumers. If we are going to be driven out of business, and into an economic disaster, it is time to declare economic warfare on the largest oil companies.

Sorry to choose such strong words and opinions, but this has gone on long enough. Osama Bin Laden may not feel that you are paying enough at the pump, but you don’t have his millions to pay your fuel bills with.

There is also an effort to stop buying gasoline on a particular day. Every business deals with ups and downs, but you have to come back to the pump; a day of poor sales isn’t going to matter to multi-millionaires. However, a month, or a season, will wake them up.

If we made a serious commitment to walk or bike more, we would all be healthier, and send a message to the oil companies. Granted, many of us commute great distances to get to work, but taking the car around the block to pick up a half-gallon of milk is ridiculous.

A little self-discipline goes a long way. Get rid of all gas guzzlers and don’t even think of buying one. Does anyone really need a 5.7 liter hemi? What are the auto manufacturers thinking? This is total gluttony, and we all know that the world’s oil reserves will run out, so let’s conserve what we have.

In your home, or business, you should insulate everything possible. Many people, and businesses, already have done this, but heat is becoming too precious a commodity to take for granted.

Write your local legislators about alternative fuel sources. Let them know this is an important election issue.
They have all sat on their rear ends long enough. Foreign oil dependence has become our foreign policy; it’s time to become self sufficient.

The oil companies are currently engaged in price gouging, but we are not helpless. If we conserve, and get some action from government, it will be for the common good.

Mechanical energy is an area of science that is making strides every day. The study of how actuators produce mechanical motion by converting various forms of energy into mechanical energy is a source of great exploration. Science finds new ways to make use of actuators every day including for medical purposes. Many scientists believe that the more they study these seemingly simple machines, the more they will discover ways of helping mankind.

The way in which a linear actuator works is that there is a motor that rotates a drive screw using a synchronous timing belt drive. Some linear actuators can also use a worm gear drive or direct drive. Which ever the choice, the turning of the screw pushes a drive nut along the screw, which in turn pushes the rod out and the rotating the screw in the opposite direction will retract the rod. According to the Association of Sciences, the drive screw is either an ACME or ball thread or is belt-driven which is what gives the machine its motion. A cover tube protects the screw nut from environmental elements and contamination thus allowing for the machines use continually without the chance of it getting gummed up. Radial thrust bearings permit the screw to rotate freely under loaded conditions and gives the linear actuator its strength.

Linear actuators usually serve as part of motion control systems. These days most are run by computers. Control systems, a device that you find linear actuators in, move or control objects. This is made possible by the actuators.

There are various forms of energy that run actuators. These forms of energy include, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and electrical. Linear actuators are used a lot in robotics and factory automation.

Linear motion is when an object moves in a straight line. This is the basic concept that drives the linear actuator. One has to stop and consider when choosing a linear actuator which type they need to fit the purpose of their project. Some things to keep in mind are the speed, stroke length and load rating of the actuator. Programmability of the actuator is also a factor especially when the application will be one that requires specialized detail. A linear actuator can be used in just about any forum. Ask yourself some questions when attempting to choose the right one for your project such as are there particular safety mechanisms required, environmental concerns to be addressed or space issues?

With more and more people living longer and longer, the question of quality of life is a constant concern. Some older people choose to grab life by the horns and soak up every second. Others are simply unable to do so. Still others choose to let little things get in the way of living and then watch as these problems snowball to take away their mobility and independence. For those who want to enjoy life to the fullest, sometimes a little help is needed in the form of devices such as electric wheelchairs, walkers and so on.

Using a wheelchair is not something most elderly people relish. However, for those who enjoy a relative high quality of life, this implement can be a real lifesaver. There’s no reason for an older person to sit back and rock away the rest of their lives when so many devices are available to help them overcome the troubles that can go along with normal aging. Getting a wheelchair isn’t giving in to aging, it’s fighting back and saying the person refuses to give up mobility and independence.

If an electric wheelchair is needed for a person with limited or even no mobility, there are some things to look for. Not all wheelchairs will work for every person, so custom fitting is often in order. Before buying the first chair that’s found, consider these things:

* Weight. Some chairs are designed to be more comfortable for people of higher weights. A chair designed for a 120-pound person is not likely to work well for a 200-pound man. Look at manufacturer specifications for weight limits before buying.

* Ease of use. Electric wheelchairs are meant to be easy to use and deliver mobility to those who have lost it. But sometimes the consoles and controls are too complex for some users to handle. Match the features with the person who will be using the device. A wheelchair can be a blessing for returning independence to those with mobility issues, but if the person who needs it is afraid to use it, there’s no point in the purchase.

* Charging and battery life. If the person who needs the chair enjoys long strolls or outings, make sure the battery has a lifespan to suit. A chair that only stays powered for a few hours won’t do in this case. Also make certain there are extra battery packs available and that charging is simple to handle.

* Price. Many elderly people find themselves living on a tight budget. Make certain the chair chosen fits the budget, or better yet, is covered by an insurance plan if doctor’s orders have been given.

Getting older doesn’t have to mean giving up on living. Although some older people enjoy full mobility and good health, this isn’t the case for everyone. But with some smart purchases to help overcome the little bumps in the road aging presents, most people can enjoy life to the fullest even in their 80s, 90s and beyond. A good power wheelchair can give those who have limited or no mobility a new lease on life. Making the right purchase, however, is vital for the proposition.

More and more scientists today agree that global warming is a serious issue and that the cause of global warming is carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned. Politicians, too, are being swayed as they see increases in property damaged, injuries, and even deaths due to natural catastrophes which appear to have gotten worse in recent decades.

Because fossil fuels appear to be the source of worldwide atmospheric change, people have began to look to other methods of producing energy. In addition to causing atmospheric change, there’s the reality that we will run out of fossil fuels. The world’s economy is based on fossil fuels but they are a finite resource. Eventually we will run out of them. Fossil fuels are not a sustainable resource. Two methods of producing energy which have little impact on the environment and are sustainable are solar and wind power.

First, we’ll take a look at solar power. Solar power is, of course, power derived from the energy of the sun’s rays. The limitation with this energy source is the sun itself. The sun will never run out, except at night. Solar power sources have been designed to compensate for the downtime of night or cloudy days, but solar power works best in sunny climates.

Solar power is generally used in one of three ways: to generate heat, to generate electricity, and to desalinate salt water. Solar powered heating systems are usually either active or passive in design. An active solar heating system uses pumps to circulate water which has been heated by the sun. Passive solar heating systems use the nature of water to create circulation. This method relies on the fact that heat energy wants to move into areas of lesser heat.

In generating electricity, solar power is harnessed by photovoltaic cells which convert the suns energy into electricity. These cells have been widely used to power calculators for decades. In solar desalination, the power of the sun is used to evaporate water to separate it from the salt and other undesirable minerals.

Another type of clean, renewable power comes from the wind. Wind power, while growing in popularity, still accounts for barely 1% of the world’s power supply. This is hard to believe considering how much the wind blows! Wind power is usually harnessed using wind turbines.

A centuries old version of harnessing wind power is the windmill. These lovely structures used the wind to grind grains and pump water. Today’s wind turbines are advanced machinery employing the latest technologies.

More and more “wind farms” are sprouting up around the world. These huge arrays of wind turbines can be found on land and offshore. The biggest ones in the US are land-based farms in California, Oregon, and Washington. There are also more and more popping up the Midwest. Because of energy costs and damage done to the environment, alternative energy sources are receiving a great deal of interest. Two of the most promising are solar and wind power.

Solar power has been available for decades. Safe, relatively clean energy, but the cost of the panels has long been too high for the average consumer. They’re also the one problem with solar energy, for those wondering about the relatively clean energy part. But the recycling of them should improve over time.

Many people would love to go solar in their homes. It’s a practical energy source in many places, even ones where you wouldn’t expect it to do all that well. And in places where homes aren’t built near a pre-existing grid, solar power is often much, much more reasonable than having wires run out.

The fact that energy prices have been steadily rising also helps solar energy appear more reasonably priced. The cost is almost all upfront, which is perhaps the greatest challenge. A good solar power system sufficient to heat the average home in the United States runs many thousands of dollars. However it also offers tremendous savings over time.

Some people even generate enough excess to where they sell electricity back. It doesn’t bring in much money on the average, but you must admit that having the power company pay you has an appeal, especially if you aren’t paying them anything anymore.

Is solar power ready to take off at long last? It could be. We’ve been hearing for a long time that the day would come when solar power became affordable, something the average family could do, rather than something strictly for the affluent and environmentally aware.

States are becoming more interested in encouraging solar power as well. Many offer rebates or tax incentives to homeowners who install solar panels, and some are starting to look at businesses as well. May as well put those rooftops to good use, after all!

Unfortunately, not all states do this yet. It sounds like they will soon! There is federal legislation requiring states to consider adopting net metering standards by 2008. How this works from state to stat can be tricky, but since 40 states already have net metering, which allows customers to sell excess electricity back, paying only when they need more than they produce, things are looking better all the time.

Solar power is starting to fare better politically too. While it still lacks the funding of the coal or oil industries, it has popular backing. That does make a difference.

Choosing solar power still isn’t the easiest thing. As with other home improvements there’s a lot of paperwork, plus finding a reputable contractor with good solar panel installation experience. But things are definitely looking up.

In the early days of solar power there were huge installations necessary to make use of this energy source. The solar panels that were needed were larger than the average full grown man. This made the collection of solar power a bit of a challenge. Therefore making use of solar power was not suitable of everyone. It was expensive and a bit of a chore as well.

These huge solar panels still exist in solar power plants, which produce energy for certain parts of the world. But over the years technological advancements have made solar power affordable and portable enough so common people can use it for their everyday lives. Nowadays solar panels have become so small that pocket calculators use these as an alternative power source to the usual single cell batteries.

But the use of portable solar power did not stop with the use of pocket calculators. Numerous inventions have made use of portable solar power and some of these are available all over the world. Let’s take of look at 5 affordable uses of portable solar power.

1) BRUNTON BATTJACK Batteries and Chargers

The charger comes with the SolarPort 4.4, wall transformer and 12V car cord to charge batteries from AC or in a vehicle. The charger can hold 4 AA or AAA rechargeable batteries. The kit has 4 1500 mAh NiMH AA battery cells. The charger will switch to trickle charge when the batteries are fully charged. It also has a discharge option for maintaining NiCad batteries. This will cost $30.

Batteries are NiMH AA dry cells, have a 1500 mAh capacity, can recharge for hundreds of times, and come in a package of 4 AA batteries. These cost $14.

2) SS-PVSMALL Power System

This portable solar power system from Silicon Solar Inc is easy to use and needs no assembly. Included in each system is an inverter/battery carrying case and 8.5 or 17-watt solar panel/charge.

This system can power a laptop computer, portable audio devices, small coloured TV, and most devices that need less than 140 watts AC 110-120v, and 60Hz input. Power time can range from 30 minutes to 56 hours, depending on the equipment being powered up.

The system is also used for indoor/outdoor lighting, and is lightweight. The system also includes inverters, cables, battery box, and sealed gel cell battery. The system comes with a 1-year warranty. The system costs $149.95.

3) UNI-KIT

The Uni-Kit system is a portable, durable, solar powered lighting system that can provide extended lighting hours to its users. This is powerful enough to let even a 12-volt radio or TV operate, and easy to install. The Uni-Kit system also comes with a basic power controller that maximizes battery life of its 12-Volt Deep Cycle SLA Battery by controlling its charging and load use, and protects the system from overcharging and excessive discharging.
Uni-Kit can be used in the garage, tool sheds, remote homes, isolated buildings, surveying sites, construction sites, camp sites, and even during water pumping operations.
Uni-Kit comes with an 11-watt fluorescent lamp that has a 1-year warranty. The 15-watt solar panel has a 20 year warranty. You can add up to 4 lamps to increase the system’s illumination capacity. The default kit weighs 10 pounds and can be purchased for $249.95 from Silicon Solar Inc. If you have additional 4 lamps, all 4 will cost an extra $235.

4) BRUNTON Portable Solar Panels

Brunton has portable CIGS (copper indium gallium diselenide) solar array panels that are thin and lightweight to save weight for backpackers. These panels produce standard 12volts outputs, and come with basic 12V vehicle socket, 4 different jack plugs, and battery clips. Solar array panels come in a 6 and 12 foldable, and 14 roll able series. Prices of these panels range from $129 to $399.

5) EN-R-PAK AC/DC Backup Power Supply

The EN-R-PAK backup power supply 200 series are compact solar power backup supplies that have built-in electronics that store, control, and produce energy from the sun, wind, or flowing water. The system can accept additional solar panels, wind turbines, or water turbines. These power supply systems use renewable stored energy to produce 115 volts and 12 volts DC. A 230-volt unit is also available for international use.

The EN-R-PAK can provide emergency power for a home or office, remote areas, a cabin or cottage, for communications, wherever and whenever you need power! This system has no parts that wear out, is environment friendly, quiet, does not emit harmful fumes, easy to operate, requires no assembly, needs almost no maintenance, and is designed to survive rugged weather conditions. These can also power energy efficient lights, a laptop computer, a small TV, rechargeable power tools, and other electrical equipment.

The EN-R-PAK has a 1-year system warranty, 20-year solar panel warranty, 2-year battery warranty, and is built to conform to UL, NEC, and CSA electrical standards.

EN-R-PAK 50-watt solar panels are liquid-proof and shatter proof. These also come with a blocking diode, 30 feet of cable with a connection plug. Wind turbines are also configured to the EN-R-PAK so changes to the power centre are not needed.

The basic system will cost $1500. Additions to the system will make the cost reach a maximum of $2950.

This sums up the possibilities for portable solar power. As time and knowledge progress other devices and possibilities will be available on the market. The prices mentioned here can give you an idea, but are by no means accurate.

I was helping a friend push his car into a service station the other night, and as I did, I asked him why he didn’t just buy a new vehicle instead of plugging more money into his beat up jalopy. He told me that there was a chance that he would be moving to a larger city in the next few months and he would not need a car, so he was waiting to see what was going to happen.

When you live in Florida, sometimes it is difficult to imagine getting around from place to place without driving in a car, however in many large urban areas that is exactly the way it is done. People use public transportation, car pools, bicycles, or even those cute little motor scooters you see more and more often. As I think about it now, I realize that there are a lot of things we can be doing in order to conserve fuel and lower the cost of travel, like biking, walking, or investing in a small electric scooter to get back and forth from work.

With gas prices so high, why not consider an alternate form of travel? Amazingly, even with the high cost of fuel, I still witness people driving their vehicles to work when they only live a few blocks away. As a country, we have gotten surprisingly lazy, and it’s not only hitting us hard in the pocketbook, but it is also affecting our health. Biking or walking a few blocks to work or school everyday would certainly help both situations.

If biking or walking hurts too much, then you should consider purchasing an electric motor scooter, which is a form of transportation rapidly growing in popularity. Electric scooters are affordable, low maintenance, and can get you where you need to go faster than a bicycle. It is important to note, however, that some large cities forbid the use of motor scooters that exceed 15 mph. Also, you must be willing to invest in a quality motor scooter or you will run into costly problems. Don’t buy cheap. Investigate online or head to a local retailer to check out the scooters if you decide to purchase one.

Whether you decide to bike or ride a scooter, remember to wear a helmet. Helmets are perhaps the best safety precaution invented, and they cost pennies compared to the expense of having dents hammered out of your skull at the hospital. Choose a helmet and take it with you to the bike store, or the motor scooter dealer. Pick your new form of transportation carefully, and ride away with that helmet firmly placed on your noggin.

We’ve seen them zooming down our neighborhood street, with their owners’ hair flapping wildly in the wind and their fat pocketbooks hanging out of their back pockets, mocking those of us with four wheeled vehicles. We’ve seen them in pictures of European countries, with little French men in their flashy helmets, maneuvering the streets of Paris. And yet we still think, there’s no way we could afford a scooter, Or can we?

An old tactic used in a new way will help you buy the cheap scooter you’ve been looking for. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that you saved up to 50 percent on your scooter once you’ve done the necessary leg work. The secret tactic is price comparison and patience. The internet makes this tactic more possible than ever. Here’s how to find the scooter of your dreams for the price in your head:

1) Start at Froogle.com. This is Google’s shopping search engine. Start by typing in “electric scooter,” “electric scooter sale,” or “electric scooter discount.” You should find an impressive number of scooter retailers as a result. Write down the best prices and deals.

2) Search Google. Run the exact same searches, but instead of just paying attention to your results, pay attention to the ads. Vendors pay tons of money to place their pay per click ads on the side of these pages. The ads pop up based on key words. Visit these sits and write down their best deals as well.

3) Utilize Yahoo.com. Run the same searches on Yahoo’s site, and you’ll be surprised by the different yields compared to Google. Pay attention to the Yahoo ads as well, because Yahoo owns Overture, which handles the whole pay per click business. Compare as many scooter companies as possible because, after all, more is better. Visit the sites and write down what you discover. You should have a lengthy list by now.

4) Visit Ebay. This online auction site will help you find the consumer price for scooters. Run a search both for “electric scooter” and “electric scooters” and write down your results. Watch the auctions for a week or so and write down the prices you see the scooters selling for. Also, consider using the “watch this auction” feature which will basically bookmark your selected auction.

5) Here’s where the patience comes in: wait two weeks, and then do this all over again. You will know a good price when you see one then, and then you can buy your scooter.

This method should yield a smarter, scooter owning you. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if you saved more than 50 percent on your new electric scooter. Don’t feel guilty about the savings either. You did the work, so you deserve the savings. Obviously more tricks to finding deals exist than this, but utilizing this old tact and new venue is at least a start to saving you money.
